The Equipment

For the Beginner If you are new to bowling, in the early stages you wont have to worry about buying a set of bowls. Bowls are provided for our Coaching Sessions and if you want to come for practise sessions there is a facility to hire a set of bowls but Flat-soled shoes are essential.
For the New Bowler the main requirements of bowling are A pair of Bowling Shoes and a Set of Bowls
Bowls Each set comprises 4 identical bowls and they come in a range of colours and sizes to fit the smallest and largest of hands. Sets of bowls are produced by a number of different manufacturers and so a wide range of makes and models are available. Other than the size, the main difference between the different models of bowls is the Bias.
Bias The built-in bias of the bowl determines the line of curvature that the bowl travels over the Green. More information can be found on the bowls manufacturers’ websites.
Second Hand To help reduce the start-up cost we have a notice board where second hand equipment, including bowls, is advertised.
Other equipment A bowls carrier is a good thing to have. Other items which the more experienced bowler will have are a measure, chalk and possibly some wedges. All are readily available from bowls equipment suppliers.
Wedges are used to support a bowl during the measuring process.
The chalk is used to mark a bowl that has touched the jack.
The measure is used to decide which bowl is closest to the jack.
Shoes A wide range of Bowling Shoes, which are designed to protect the bowling surface, are available. The main feature of these shoes is the flat sole with minimal grip and no heel.
